Making Shirts
I made this shirt (Mc Calls 2447) for my DH. We bought this fabric in Hawaii at Fabric Mart in downtown Honolulu.
I made this as a surprise for DH’s birthday. Since I was not able to measure DH prior I had to flat measure one of his other shirts that fit DH so that I could purchase the correct size. This was really not a problem since my DH happens to love wearing Hawaiian print shirts. However, he wears only one brand Reyn Spooner (which are manufactured in Hawaii) and my DH has quite a collection of them, too.
Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirts are essentially pattern-less – meaning that the pattern flows across the shirt without being interrupted by the pocket or the button placket. I did try to plan this shirt that way; however I wasn’t as successful as I would of liked. The button placket does not match as well as I would hope. But being my first attempt at this pattern I think I can do better next time. More important my DH wears this shirt! It fits great! And what better compliment can one receive from their sewing then having the recipient wear what you have made! Just a quick pic of the DH’s closet. See waht I mean. If you haven’t looked into a Reyn Spooner for your DH, then you should. The irony of this whole Hawaiian shirt wardrobe is that my DH never even owned one of these shirts until he met me!
Another edition of the Vogue V8497 – Marcy Tilton. I bought this fabric from GorgeousFabrics. The pattern calls for raw edges; however I didn’t want raw edges so I folded over the edges on the front and back and used a fold over cross grain strip for the neck edge. I haven’t sewn much with knits so I am not sure which is the ‘right side’ and which is the ‘not so right side’ so I could have done this top wrong; however, I like how it fits – which is great and I figure if someone questions the fabric orientation I will just say it was a design decision. I was told (by a very significant person in my life) that it looks very Star Trekian!
T-Shirt – Vogue Pattern V8497
Made this T-shirt from fabric I purchased from Gorgeous Fabric. I really liked the fabric on the website, but wasn’t too thrilled about it when I opened the package, but once I got the T-shirt made I liked it. What a love- hate relationship! The T-shirt doesn’t look too great on my dress form, but it fits pretty good. I did have to increase the sleeve width which was no problem, but the next time I make it I would cut the sleeve with one inch side seams so I have more fabric to work with. I’ll post more pictures from this pattern, too. Sewing with knits is new to me, so I am a beginner with this fabric, but so far, I really like working with knits and they are so comfortable. Not sure why I was always so apprehensive about sewing with knits.
Vogue 8497 – Marcy Tilton
I just recently sewed the following pattern. This was a very easy pattern and very true to size, too. I made this in two different fabrics, both fabrics I purchased from Gorgeous Fabrics (wonderful website for fabric – if you haven’t gone- you need to!). I made a few changes. The pattern calls for raw edges at the front and the back and around the neck line (View A & B). I increased the edge and just folded it over and topstitiched it. I know it isn’t as per the pattern, but I don’t really like raw edges. And so you are wondering where the pictures of my finished shirt are – yeah so am I. They will be in my next installment.
Welcome to the 21st Century
Hello! I started my first blog. Hopefully, I’ll have more to say at a later date.
